Our livestock pigs are in a closed herd that started with 13 registered LBH in 2020. We started this herd from some of the last 150 Large Black Hogs remaining in the US. Since then our pigs have been born and raised here. In open competition, the best boars and good moms sustain our herd. Piglets, boars, barrens, and sows are not separated. They are social, field born competitors. LBH are large eared, beautiful, even tempered, and rare.
Beautiful heritage livestock piglets can first be processed at 10 to 11 months old and 215-260 lbs. Over a pig’s lifetime they can reach 400-600 lbs.
Historically, Large Black Pigs reaching 600 to 800 lbs were an essential source of fats, bacon, and very flavorful tender lean meat due to the lack of back fat. They are long, calm, red meat producers that do well on native forage.
Our pigs are raised free range on grass and woods and have supplemental non-medicated feed available weekly. Additionally pigs have been used to clear undergrowth and brush with movable electric fence.
Large Black Hogs are enjoyable to watch when they pull tall grasses to make giant nests for shelter or piglets. If you touch them daily and talk to them when feeding, drinking, or bedding down; they will be easy to handle and observe while giving birth. If you have time to raise pigs this way, they will lay down when their belly is rubbed.
